How to Film a Listing Video on an iPhone: 2026 Setup

To film a listing video on an iPhone, turn on Lock Camera so the phone cannot switch lenses mid-shot, lock exposure before each move, record 4K at 30 fps in landscape, and put the phone on a three-axis gimbal. The gimbals worth buying cost $75 to $160 on their makers' US stores today. The rest is walking slowly and keeping walls vertical.

A listing video, here, means an unbranded walk-through of one property, filmed once and cut into an MLS version, a Zillow version and a vertical. Everything below was checked against Apple's iPhone User Guide and the gimbal makers' own stores on 24 September 2026. Setting names can differ slightly by model and iOS version.

Which iPhone settings should you change before a listing shoot?

Most of these sit under Settings, Camera, Record Video, per Apple's page on changing video recording settings. The why column is our production reasoning, not Apple's.

Setting | Where | Set it to | Why, for a listing

Resolution and frame rate | Record Video | 4K at 30 fps | 4K leaves room to crop a vertical out of a horizontal frame. 30 fps gives each frame more light indoors than 60.

Lock Camera | Record Video | On | Apple says it prevents switching between cameras while recording. A lens switch mid-walk reads as a jump.

Enhanced Stabilization | Record Video | Off when on a gimbal | Apple says it zooms in slightly. The gimbal already stabilises, so keep the wider frame.

Auto FPS | Record Video | Off | It drops to 24 fps in low light on its own. You want every clip at one frame rate for the edit.

Action mode | Video mode in the Camera app | Off indoors on a gimbal | Built for handheld movement. Apple offers a separate Action Mode Lower Light setting for dim scenes, and the gimbal does the same job.

Formats | Settings, Camera, Formats | Most Compatible if your editor or video host rejects HEVC | Apple's Most Compatible option records H.264 instead of HEVC.

Grid | Settings, Camera | On | Keeps door frames and wall edges vertical in the frame.

AE/AF Lock | Touch and hold the screen | Lock once per room, before you move | Stops the exposure pumping when the lens passes a bright window.

Which gimbal under $200 should you buy?

Three current three-axis models, priced on their makers' US stores on 24 September 2026.

Gimbal | Maker's store price | Launch price | What matters for a listing

DJI Osmo Mobile 7 | $75, out of stock | $89, February 2025 | Built-in tripod, no extension rod

DJI Osmo Mobile 7P | $99, out of stock | $149, February 2025 | Adds an extension rod and the Multifunctional Module

Insta360 Flow 2 Pro | $159.99, Standard Bundle | Not checked | Built-in selfie stick and tripod

Sources: the DJI store listing, which shows both Osmo Mobile 7 models, the launch prices reported by DroneDJ on 18 February 2025, and the Insta360 store listing.

Subject tracking, the feature both brands lead with, does nothing on a listing shoot because nobody is walking in the frame. What matters is three-axis stabilisation, a clamp that fits your phone in its case, and battery life. DJI lists phones 67 to 84 mm wide, 6.9 to 10 mm thick and 170 to 300 g as compatible, rates the series at about 10 hours measured level and stationary, and uses a standard 1/4 inch tripod thread, so any tripod you own works for locked-off exterior shots.

How do you move the phone through a house?

Five moves cover almost every room. These are our production defaults, not platform rules.

Move | How to do it | Use it for

Push | Walk forward at a slow, even pace, elbows bent, gimbal at chest height | Entering a room, hallway into a room

Slide | Walk sideways past something in the foreground, like a counter edge | Kitchens and anywhere depth sells the space

Pan reveal | Stand still and turn slowly from a wall to the room's best view | Views, open plans, the backyard from the door

Pedestal | Raise or lower the gimbal straight up or down | Staircases, high ceilings, over an island

Locked-off | Gimbal on its tripod, no movement at all | The exterior, the opening frame and the closing frame

Start and finish every move still for a beat, so an editor has a clean cut point. Stay on the 1x main camera for most of the shoot. The 0.5x ultra wide shows more room but bends straight lines near the edges of the frame, so save it for small bathrooms and keep door frames away from the edges when you use it.

What else does the shoot need?

Can a phone-shot listing video go on Zillow?

As a link from your MLS Virtual Tour field, yes, if your board allows the host you use. Not into the Showcase video slot. Zillow's Showcase guide only accepts video made by the listing's own photographer and uploaded through Aryeo, at 120 seconds or less. If Showcase matters on a listing, ask your photographer to film it.

Should you film it yourself or hand it off?

Filming costs a gimbal and an afternoon. Editing is where most self-shot listing video stalls, because four clean exports take longer than the shoot did. Our comparison of AI real estate video tools against a human editor prices both ways of finishing it, and real estate agents filming more than one listing a week should template the exports once rather than rebuilding them every time.

Frequently asked questions

Should I film a listing video vertical or horizontal?

Horizontal, in 4K. The MLS and Zillow versions are horizontal, and a 4K horizontal frame has enough pixels to crop a 1080 by 1920 vertical for Reels and Shorts from the centre. Filming vertical first leaves you nothing to crop the horizontal from, so frame important features near the middle.

Do I need a gimbal, or is iPhone stabilisation enough?

For a few short handheld shots outdoors, Action mode or Enhanced Stabilization can be enough. For a continuous interior walk-through, a gimbal is smoother, and it lets you turn Enhanced Stabilization off, which Apple says zooms in slightly, so you keep the wider view of each room.

What frame rate should I use for a listing video?

30 fps for everything, with Auto FPS off so the phone does not switch some clips to 24 fps in dim rooms. Use 60 fps only for shots you plan to slow down, and only in bright rooms, since each frame gets less light at the higher rate.

Key takeaways

  • Turn on Lock Camera, turn off Auto FPS, and record 4K at 30 fps in landscape.
  • On a gimbal, turn Enhanced Stabilization off: Apple says it zooms in slightly, and the gimbal already does the job.
  • Lock exposure once per room before moving, so bright windows do not make the picture pump.
  • Three-axis gimbals from DJI and Insta360 cost $75 to $160 on their makers' US stores today. Tracking features are irrelevant for a listing.
  • Five moves cover a house: push, slide, pan reveal, pedestal and locked-off.
  • Phone footage can reach Zillow as an MLS link, but only the listing's photographer can fill the Showcase video slot.

If the filming is done and the edit is not

EchoPulse Media edits agent-shot listing footage into MLS, Showcase and vertical exports on a 48-hour standard turnaround. Send the clips in the order you shot them and the export list you need.
